And of course the day I sit down to write this I have something interesting to talk about-we got thunder and lightning today-some monsoonal weather which is not unusual for here, especially this time of year.So I'm adding it to my list of things that I love about San Diego(also:It's just about cured me of my fear of thunder, so there is that!)
There is so much to like about living here-one of the things that I love-and you can't really get a feeling for it unless you're flying over it in an airplane-is all of the wilderness areas.When you're flying into San Diego you go over a lot of forest before you get to where there are houses. And you understand why forest fires are such a big deal when they happen. Brush fires, too.

[It IS San Diego personified!]
The Port Of San Diego wants to kick Anthony's(a San Diego institution) out of its current location. To hear the people from the Port Authority, Anthony's is dated. OK, more than a little, but it's hardly the biggest offender in the San Diego area. And Anthony's has had several overhauls over the years.
I've seen a lot of comments about how the quality of the food at Anthony's has gone downhill in the past few years.Really? IMO the food at Anthony's is consistently good!(mind you,I always order the same thing..I am a creature of habit for sure!)
Another really good place is Point Loma Seafood-I hadn't been there for while..they completely remodeled the place, it looks completely different inside-but the food is consistently good, just like Anthony's.
Lots of suggestions on Chowhound about what should go there should the Port Authority manage to kick Anthony's out of there..Of course, these are people that think Anthony's is touristy(and it is, don't get me wrong..) but the food is good, and it's consistent, and is one of the more affordable places there(right across the street is a Ruth Chris steakhouse, which is WAY spendy, and there is also a British pub which I have never been to so I have no idea how expensive it is.) I think there may be a couple of walk-up places right past where Anthony's is.. and if you go a little bit further you get to Seaport Village which has something for every budget(though I remember trying to buy my lunch there on a school field trip..$10 barely covered it.And I do mean barely.)
If you go more uptown, it gets more expensive,though there are good deals to be had(I give the 99 cent (yes)Chinese food place a wide berth, though.That's food poisoning waiting to happen :P)
The suggestions for what should go in run to the froofy, or stuff that San Diego has a glut of(seafood restaraunts- including froofy seafood restaraunts not a casual place like Anthony's),brew pubs serving food(especially pizza, those are a dime a dozen here-San Diegans are big on craft beer,we're a hub for craft beer) and Mexican food(ditto.)
All of those things(especially the Mexican food) are subjective.Personally, I've always liked the Mexican food restaraunts in Old Town(though at least one or more has had to move because of high rents.)I also love the mainstays near my parents house-Fidel's and Tony's Jacal.
El Indio is another favourite of mine which gets panned by Chowhound.The food there is really good and it's hard to choose what you want to eat(they have a BIG menu!)

[San Diego places]
Yesterday we went down to the Natural History Museum to see the exhibit on King Tut(If you're in San Diego or are going to be in San Diego) it's well worth the price of admission.)Plus,the Natural History museum excells in a lot of areas. If you're not familiar with the area(we had a couple of people in our group-it was me, my mom and dad, my brother and my niece and 2 of my nephews(one of whom was taking the day off school.)
Normally,I would have a problem with that(I'm a big believer in getting a good education!),but since it was educational, I was cool with it!
I love going down to Balboa Park-there were a lot of people down there even though it was a Tuesday afternoon. I noticed that there were people up in the bell tower(they just opened up the bell tower which is right next door to the Museum Of Man.(you have to book your tickets to go up in the bell tower ahead of time which I get-they don't want a bunch of people up there-google it and you'll see why!)
There are so many great museums(my favourites, in no particular order: Fleet Space Center, Museum Of Art, and the Natural History museum.)
Also, there's the Old Globe theater-which is actually 3 theaters, one of which is a open-air theater.That's where they do Shakespeare plays in the summertime(I always go to one of the Shakespeare plays-I alternate-one year I go to a tragedy and the next I'll go to a comedy.)
There's lots of open spaces in the park-the park is right next to a bunch of canyons-it would be easy to start hiking in one of the more remote areas and get lost.
My dad and I always park across the Cabrillo bridge(again, google it!) when we go to the Old Globe and walk it. On summer nights, it's really nice, and they have these lights strung up on the bridge(except a lot of them are always burnt out,lol)

[my hometown]
On out way home, we had to drive through Little Italy(it's only recently that I knew we had a Little Italy in San Diego.) You have to go through there to get to the freeway because of the way the streets are in downtown San Diego(I live here and think it's.. *shakes head*.) The worst was when I was trying to get to the House Of Blues. To anyone visiting from elsewhere, yes, the streets downtown are laid out wonkily.We're sorry. LOL.
Anyways, I hadn't been in Little Italy for a while. In spite of its name, there are some non-Italian restaraunts-a British pub is one of them-just down the road is another British pub-the two close to each other are the Princess of Wales and Shakespeare's, respectively.
I've only ever eaten at Princess,gone to the 7-11 and coffee shop right near the trolley station and Flippi's(about which more in a minute). There used to be a great Italian bakery next door(or a couple of doors down from? Flippi's that had every kind of pastry you could think of but they also did all of the Italian specialties like cannolis and pine nut cookies.
Flippi's is incredible. So, when you walk in, it's like you're in New York-the front of the restaraunt is a deli,and they sell every kind of ingredient you could ever want if you're cooking Italian food-and of course they have cold cuts-the only place that is better stocked(and is as much of a specialty store/restaraunt) is Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad. I think I've mentioned Tip Top before..they are a full service European grocery and restaraunt. If you are looking for unusual meats,they probably have it.
Anyways, as I said before, Flippi's is also a restaraunt. With very good pizza. The times that we've been there there's been a wait but the wait is well worth it.
